Accomplished (:

The reason I made this blogging site was to present it as my senior project but since that part of my life has past, I can now use this blogging sight for more legitimate reasons.

Right now I am feeling very much accomplished. In a couple of days I will be graduating from high school. Finally, after 4 years of hard work and after 3 different schools, I reach this pivotal point in my life. I would imagine that the walk from my seat to the diploma will be one of the longest walks I will ever take. It is a walk I am most looking forward to.

Last week was the start of my teacher's class. I assume there was around 10 aspiring teachers present. Teacher's class is really something! You know, I could complain how the whole class took two hours, but throughout the course of those two hours I was hooked on to every subject that was being taught. We covered public speaking, ministerial lesson 1, and Bible history. Am I a dork for saying that? Well if I am then IM PROUD OF IT! But yeah, totally looking forward to the next classes!

On the side note, going to SF State for the fall semester! I am very hopeful for the days ahead. To all my friends out there, I can't thank you guys enough for my days have been filled with much joy. Aw man this is super corny, but it's from the heart! haha. I thank God above all for blessing me with the greatest joys in my life- my duties.

Accomplished!

Our Questionable Fate

Although many attempts have been made to determine the origin of man-kind, no one can be certain when such an event really took place. A widely regarded belief concerning this phenomenon is that the species of man has only been around for a very short time. There are also those who believe in the concept of evolution- the belief that our kind was evolved from monkeys. Whatever our belief may be, it is certain that even our mind, however advanced it may be, cannot demystify the extent of our existence. Perhaps even more puzzling is the conclusion of our race. This mystery reveals the million dollar question: what is our fate?

20 years ago the luxury of computers were only reserved for the fortunate few that can afford its ridiculous price tags, now it is almost impossible to walk into a house without seeing one. With the way that society presently functions, the use of computers is almost inevitable. It is the backbone of small businesses and the foundation of huge corporations. It is a college student's best friend and the brain of most factories. It is the military's ultimate weapon and perhaps the catalyst to the world of tomorrow. A series of complicated math and science constitute the computer and its entirety. I am not qualified to explain each component that makes the computer what it is instead I will make the connection to the computer and nature. Take for instance the computer screen. Surely the material that encompasses the computer is made of some form of plastic and I can surmise that this plastic is a product of the earth's soil. So really a computer, stripped of all its glorious science and mathematics, is another product of the elements of the earth. The same is held true for everything that we manufacture. As we continue to build, little bits of nature will be breached. This is evident every time a new building is erected and in the continuous expansion of our infrastructure.

Building and destroying is perhaps the formula to keep the world moving. This method of expansion follows such a simple concept- find land, cut trees, blowup remaining landscapes and we have ourselves the foundation for more buildings. This frightening system of building and destroying is almost inevitable. As populations continue to expand, more land is required to accommodate the growing number of people. Where there are people, there will be buildings, roads, cars and factories poisoning the environment. If land is not accommodated by such structures, they serve as space to dump out garbage. The composition of all our waste combined with the poisonous presence of large cities has inevitably brought nature under our mercy.

Nature does not have the capacity to heal the mortal wounds man has inflicted; that is our responsibility. It is to some comfort that I see people collectively helping to reduce further damage done to our environment. Such an action is perhaps the product of the global warming scare. The more they know about this alarming condition, the greater their fear is. According to scientists, global warming does not merely result in the rising of temperature but also in much more catastrophic events. The melting of the polar ice caps is arguably the most noticeable as well as the most terrifying concept in connection to global warming. Extreme weather change is also of profound concern. Such drastic changes are the products of human activity.

As the birds are indebted to the trees that constitute their dwelling place, we as well owe this earth for supporting our life. Every element crafted by the Almighty's hand was made to facilitate the daily life of all creatures inhabiting the four corners of the world. Nothing is misplaced nor miscalculated for the ideal conditions that support life. The air that we breathe is supplied in abundance and the water in the sea is necessary to bring life to nature. An animal kingdom was established to carry on the natural cycle of nature- the prey that feeds on the grass, the predator that feeds on prey, and the vultures that devour the leftover carcass. Once this process is carried out then the carcass will seep back into the soil of the earth and henceforth the process continues. This natural flow has maintained perfect harmony before our appearing. However, under mankind's administration, this cycle was abruptly disturbed.

Perhaps the creatures of the land, air, and sea were able to maintain nature's cycle due to their absence of thinking. They allow nature to carry on its cycle however unfair the cycle may be. The victims that are eaten by the predators will not stand up to revolt against the superior creatures, instead they will continue being the victims and vice versa for the predators. The capacity to think is arguably the defining characteristic that sets us apart from the rest of the animals. Such a gift has led us to this glorious age of technology. On the contrary, it has also led to this lifestyle of living. Our capacity to think does not allow for a lower standard of living, for this reason factories, buildings, cars and roads were made to facilitate daily life.

This lifestyle, however, does not give countenance to the creatures with whom share this planet. Perhaps more than any other creature on the planet, the polar bears have been the most devastated. Slowly but surely these creatures are dying off as the ice caps on the far corners of the earth quietly melt away. Now more than ever multitudes of people are turning their attention to the ever-deteriorating condition of our environment. Even science is pushing toward greener technology to remedy such conditions. The excessive amount of CO2 levels in the atmosphere is the primary culprit- the result of everyday life. But who am I to say that our way of living is an abomination; I too am guilty of such a lifestyle.

Frankly, I believe global warming has been ignored for so long that its catastrophic outcomes are almost irreversible. Unless we resort to a humbler lifestyle, then such conditions will carry on without much difficulty. Is this transition to a simple life possible? perhaps not. As previously mentioned, our standard of living will not allow for a quieter life. Such a proposition is too radical to even be remotely practical. This human race lives in a world that is constantly in fast-forward. Our primary aim is to build bigger buildings, to expand infrastructure, to breakthrough in science and all the like. This era is perhaps most appropriately defined by our technological advances. I want to say that we live in the golden age of science but truth be told science will never have a golden age. Frankly, science will continue to develop as our minds get more sophisticated. Our existence will always tower over all other creatures of the land, air, and sea. Along with out existence is the inevitable process of expansion. As one or two departs from this life, three or four more will carry on the race. This process will go on for as long as we walk this earth.

The million dollar question is: what is our fate? This question is perhaps the most frequently pondered upon and also the most disappointing. One may be greatly comforted to know that our later counterparts will have the answer to the questions we were not able to answer. With every new generation comes even greater knowledge and with greater knowledge our race can continue existing. The human mind is gifted with an infinite amount of potential. Just how far will we go until the dreaded "it is impossible" concept overtakes faculties of each mind? Will there ever be a point where we reach the summit of knowledge that from that point on downhill is the only way to go? Our mind has taken us beyond the skies to the moon and even to the deepest depths of the ocean. But despite of each groundbreaking excursion there is so much yet to be navigated. Will this reckless lifestyle be our undoing? Are we dreaded with the same fate of the once supreme creatures of the land- the dinosaurs? So much is to be surmised concerning the conclusion of mankind but for now that question will only be resolved until the actual time comes.

Break away

I like to think of myself as somewhat of an intellectual person. It does not take much to fascinate me. The sight of heavy clouds on a rainy day is enough to capture my awe. As the rays of light from heaven penetrate through the barrier of clouds, I cannot help but to marvel at its majesty. Such was not the case perhaps some five years ago. At that delicate age of 13 the sight of heavy clouds only meant one thing- rain.

The transition from a child to a teenager is a terrifying journey. No longer can innocence be used as an excuse for any shortcoming that was committed. We are expected to be more independent in how we carry out our functions. At this stage of life, our minds can be easily manipulated by anyone including but not limited to friends and family. What lies ahead is the inevitable process of maturity.

Along with the process of maturity, there is the desire to establish a good social standing. Needless to say, we all have that desire, including myself. Any opportunity to be integrated into the popular crowd I was more than willing to take.

It was after the winter break of my 7th grade that this opportunity came. A group of closely associated friends asked me to join their group. Apparently one of the guys from their group was becoming a nuisance and my function was to fill his spot. The opportunity was too good to be true; I quickly filled the spot without any hesitation. This was of course not an initiation to any gang, they were just a group of friends that made up a clique. I knew that joining them would be my ticket to popularity. Overtime my prediction became a reality. Slowly but surely I became buddies with the so-called popular kids; an accomplishment I look back with regret.

My personality back then was not at all exciting. Small talk was my weakness. Even more difficult is my capacity to initiate a conversation. Evidently, my personality was not the catalyst to my acceptance. As I ponder upon my recollections, I have come to the realization that my integration was due to my race. Being Filipino, I was one of the minorities in a Hispanic-dominant school. There were about 3 other Filipinos in my school if my recollection serves me right. "Chino" was the nickname I was commonly associated with. It is my understanding that "Chino" is an informal Spanish word for a person of Asian background. It mattered not to me, I accepted this nickname without any hesitation. In fact, I even exploited myself as THEE Asian dude. Any stereo-type that was associated with the Asian culture, I made it a mission to fulfill it. This was accomplished with the occasional "WATAAH!" or a respectful bow in mockery of Eastern culture traditions. I never meant any harm to them, but every time I performed such a deed, it was always met with humor. This was perhaps my only value in any friendships I shared with the popular. My only contributions were watahhs! or hi-yahs! I was never there to be the shoulder they can cry on, or the one to turn to when times get rough. My function was for the amusement for others.

At some point I must have realized the extent of my stupidity, otherwise I would not be performing this task of writing. In fact, I never really had a passion for writing until I began work on this book. Such an endeavor I would never have thought about doing in time past. Nevertheless here I am, writing to my hearts desire, nothing to hold me back except the extent of my own thoughts.

Perhaps the origin of these thoughts branched out after watching a peculiar film entitled "Koyaanisqatsi". Literally meaning "life out of balance" the film presents a perspective that criticizes the work of mankind. Prior to watching this film, our class learned about the Transcendentalist movement. This movement was comprised of great thinkers of the 19th century that advocated the ideas of Transcendentalism. Every concept or idea exploited by this movement was at the very least valid and by all means relevant.

There was one particular idea inspired by the movement that I personally found most thought-provoking. The idea of mankind's conformity with all of society was, to me, of profound interest. This doctrine of Transcendentalism was perhaps the main concept advocated by Koyaanisqatsi. Watching the film was in itself an enlightening experience. A film that dares go beyond the boundaries of conventional wisdom should have the capacity to leave its audience with a second thought. Perceptibly, Koyaanisqatsi's objective was to give its audience insight to another perspective of humanity. They accomplished this by showing a compilation of scenes highlighting man's achievements such as skyscrapers, cars, and airplanes; contrarily, scenes highlighting the destruction of nature were also shown.

I will admit that the film will not appeal to a wide audience. With its lack of dialogue and repetitious scenes, it is easy to stray from watching the film. As for me, I praise the film for its originality and power. I was amazed that I had the capacity to appreciate such a film. The film truly achieved its objective in me for I walked out of that class with much insight, primarily of mankind. What was of great intrigue to me was the extent of the film's relevance. No one can deny that wealth is of greatest concern to most people. Getting and spending is widely regarded as the solution to an ailing economy. This is certainly the case in today's economy. As technological advances continue to elevate today's markets, the demand for the newest gadgets is ever increasing. What may be groundbreaking today is obsolete tomorrow. Take for instance the Ipod or the Mac computers. Yesterday we came to know and love the original Ipod, then came the mini, then the video, and so on. Likewise, there was the original Mac computer and then came the Macbooks that seem to become increasingly smaller as technology advances. The list of consumer products goes on and on including plasma screens, touch screen phones, more fuel efficient cars, and so on.

The point is, with so many products hitting the shelves we cannot help but to spend. It really is a never-ending cycle of manufacturing and consuming. Big businesses make them and we buy them. As long as there are things to be bought we will continue to consume. That is how it has been since the beginning of civilization and quite frankly, its a precedent that will always be maintained.

That is Koyaanisqatsi's message- conformity. Getting and spending has been a practice so commonly performed that we simply join the crowd. There is a saying, "if you cant beat them, join them", a statement reinforced in today's economy. The need to acquire the newest technology is a fad so commonly exercised. Possession of such material deems you "hip" or rather "cool".

Conformity is everywhere! We conform to the way we spend, to the way we dress, the way to prosperity; every function that is conducted in our lives is carried out in a uniform fashion. I welcomed this new perspective of life with open arms. Even my own life is entitled to conformity. Our society has exposed us to such a way of life that we have no choice but to follow. If only I can follow what I preach. If only I can conduct my life with humility. The humility of Kind David who trusted not on his own power for he knew very well that he was weak, but instead placed his life to the Lord. The Almighty delivered him from inevitable defeat, from the bondage of the Philistines, from the mighty Goliath. Even as he became ruler of a nation, King David entrusted his life in the Lord's hand. Despite of the many battles won in King David's reign, he always remained humble, never giving credit to his own power but to the power of God. Or perhaps Thoreau's resolve in spending time in the woods. By no means was Thoreau ever hypocritical when it came to his ideals. His love for nature was truly genuine, one who discovered contentedness in the solitude of the woods. So many have taught the philosophy of appreciating nature, to spend their time in solitude with its elements. But who can truly venture into the woods and spend their time meditating in its solitude. Even I will not have that resolve. Such a humility I may never achieve for the time at present forbids me to do so. Yet it is my resolve to walk this path of humility. The humility of King David who remained a loyal servant despite of countless victories and Thoreau who can find joy in the most simple elements of nature.

Perhaps a different perspective of life was what I needed to look beyond the boundaries of what is perceptible. To look beyond conventional wisdom- elements unseen by the naked eye. May I not be the same person who became a fool just to be noticed but may I be content with the few who truly accept me for who I am. May I not live for the moments that only make today worthwhile but for the moments that will bring a brighter tomorrow. May I not be another soul tossed and driven by the wind.

The Amateur's Guide to Wisdom and Contentness

Never before has my search for wisdom manifested itself more than in these past months. It seems like the unfortunate series of events that presently plague our world triggered my conviction in searching for more wisdom. Having wisdom is essential to our lives; it opens the door to indispensable treasures such as understanding, happiness, and peace of mind. During these troubling times, content ness should be our greatest favor. Perhaps being content with what we have is most difficult because the condition of the world continues to worsen. But let us look at this unfortunate event from a different perspective. Sure we may not have the material possessions we use to have, nor do we have the same influence as we previously had. However, as long as we still have our families, food on the table, and a roof to take shelter in, should that not be the ticket to our happiness? How foolish it is to believe that money and power is the greatest source of happiness. If that is the case, then the simple treasures that are present in our everyday lives will become irrelevant. In fact, was it not man’s persistent thirst for wealth that contributed to this present crisis? Of course, this is nothing new; ever since the beginning of man greediness has always been present. Now greediness is manifested in the form of a global economic crisis. Assuredly we will never experience another catastrophe such this present one if we just were kind to one another. Sadly, such an occurrence will never happen, so we can only hope for a better tomorrow. The problems that now plague our world are too real and terrifying. Perhaps even more terrifying is waking up the next day with even more burdens that the previous.

There is no one that is spared from the crisis that burdens our world. No man or woman is impervious to the problems of everyday life. Going back to my point regarding the acquisition of wisdom, this may be the key to coping with everyday stresses. Of course, wisdom is not an intuition we are born with. It is something that accumulates as we live out our lives. The extent of our wisdom is manifested in the decisions we make everyday. We all have a collection of wisdom inside our minds. So often we cannot tap into our inner selves because of our surroundings. Why not stop for a moment, take a deep breath and venture towards the outside world. Take a hike on the highest hill you can find, get to the highest point then remain there for as long as time permits. Look towards the horizon and see the beautiful landscapes. How inconceivable it must be to even fathom its beauty! How can something so sublime be crafted by the elements that are present in our everyday lives. Perhaps you found it hard to believe because you mind has accumulated so much despair that you simply forgot about the simple treasures you see everyday. Now your mind is free of any congestion. Free to dwell upon the deepest thoughts and feelings lurking inside your mind. To remember the events in your life that bought overwhelming joy. The moments that made you proud to be whom you are. Even the moments that forever changed your life.

Perhaps this moment of recollection may be a moment that forever changes your life. This moment may be the opportunity to step outside the boundaries of what is conceivable. Questions that we would never try to comprehend. Like the concept of time. According to Lao Tzu “time is a created thing” so then what is this moment you are living. Could you be in a moment of infinity? If so then where does infinity start, or end? Or the purpose of life. Tomorrow you will probably be back in the office once again filing your papers. So what that lead to? Of course you would say “simply to assure myself and my family food on the table and a roof to take shelter in.” If at this moment you are asking yourself “is this what life is all about?” then you are seeking for understanding.

That is what is so beautiful about wisdom! You see elements in life from another perspective. Life is not just about filing documents or putting bread on the table. In fact life is everywhere; in the birds of the air, water in the sea, the leaves on the trees, everything is full of life. Now you see life as a work of art, all the things we took for granted now have color. The sky and the clouds are no longer black and white and the grass is much greener. Everything is clear, as it should be. Wiped away are the blemishes that darken this earth. The wars that kill the innocent, the murders on our streets, hate, racism, families being driven away from their homes, and all the like dare not disturb us in this solitude. There are no human capitals in sight; all that we see is purely nature. Witness now the earth in its true form. Here, there are no laws necessary to maintain order, but who needs order when it has been maintained since the beginning. Even before the creation of time, nature has maintained itself in perfect harmony. In our society, there is a constant need for the creation of new laws to maintain order. Even then, we do not conduct ourselves in a manner that brings peace and balance. Perhaps we should just wipe out all the rules and just rely on our instincts and intuition. However, such a concept is too radical to be practiced. Instead of bringing peace and balance, it will allow for further unrest and disturbance. We are simply too proud of ourselves.

In no way will we be able to co-exist with one another without biting each other’s head. It may work for a certain amount of time, but at some point, there will always be that face in the crowd yearning to ascend everyone else. No one is at fault here; it is human nature to take advantage of their fellow man. Such is not the case in the kingdom of nature. A mouse will accept that it is at the bottom of the food chain. Under no circumstance will the mouse play the role of the lion. It may have the ambition to become strong and mighty like the lion but it will never be the lion. It is a simple concept really; in nature, the lion is the supreme hunter and the mouse is where it stands at the bottom. That is how it has been and until the end of time, that is how it will stand.

So now as you ponder upon the works of The Almighty, think not about the impurities that make us human, that is something we can never change. Be at peace with yourself. Rejoice for you were given this privilege to escape from the bondage of the cruel world. Let this defining moment be the rock of your strength. The foundation that will never crumble. Remember the Almighty and all of his great works. When life gets you down, seek out this solitude. May it be the hiding place when trouble seems to find you at every corner. Continue seeking for wisdom, for understanding, for insight. Look for the very purpose why you wake up everyday. Hopefully one day, stars aligned, you may find true content.
